Driving a manual transmission vehicle means being familiar with the clutch. While it’s the clutch that takes all the abuse, it’s usually good for up to 100,000 miles. It’s part and parcel of a manually-driven car, so knowing its quirks and how to troubleshoot it can be helpful.
A worn out clutch will either slip or make noise. Sometimes, it gets contaminated with oil from the engine or the transmission leaks. A faulty hydraulic link, clutch or fork may also cause disengagement problems.
The clutch is supposed to slip when you step on it. It lets you shift gears and transfer power from the engine to the transmission. But it should hold firm once released. If it doesn’t, the engine will rev, but the car won’t move. The problem is most likely a worn clutch, or the clutch pedal needs adjusting. It’s important to have this checked to avoid a breakdown while driving, as that could lead to accidents.
To address this, the transmission must be removed and the clutch – made up of the flywheel, disc, pressure plate and bearing – replaced. Get affordable replacement parts from Mazda wreckers in Perth or brand new replacements from the original manufacturers.
It’s important for the clutch to be working properly, for safety reasons. Take the vehicle to the shop when it needs clutch repairs.
Not shifting gears
Since the clutch functions to allow the shifting of gears, there must be something wrong if this doesn’t work. Experts will either diagnose that there’s a worn or damaged part in the internal or external transmission, or it may be just an electrical problem. Unless you have fairly good mechanical know-how, especially regarding vehicles, it’s best to have a mechanic see this.
Listen to the clutch when in use. Pay attention to how it feels under your foot. When there are noises like chirping, rumbling or even squealing, it’s important to have it checked.
Sometimes it’s as simple as adjusting the clutch cable, other times it’s the hydraulics. It’s still best to have clutch issues checked early on, to avoid replacing the entire clutch system. You don’t want an expensive repair that will also take time.
